a magazine / PRESIDENT

IMG_5531_convert_20140519090415.jpg

My husband always reads a magazine, PRESIDENT which is targeted for a business person or an office worker and is issued biweekly.

He bought the latest one last weekend as usual, and he lent it to me because it features articles about English learning, especially TOEIC in a timely manner. I was very pleased to read it because I'm going to take a TOEIC test following September as you may know. And I was thinking that I would concentrate in studying from the beginning of June for the test.

I've been studying using books, TOEIC Test プラス・マガジン since I took the test last fall, but I will use other text books from June. So the magazine, PRESIDENT is very useful for me.
After studying several books of プラマガ, my listening ability seems to improve a little, while my reading one is not still good. So I will study reading parts more from next month.

Recommended Corrections:

My husband always reads PRESIDENT magazine. It is a biweekly publication which targets business and office professionals.

My husband, as usual, bought the latest issue. He normally lends them to me because the magazine features articles about learning English, especially on TOEIC. I was very pleased to read the latest article on TOEIC because, as you may already know, I will be taking a TOEIC test this September. Starting this June, I am thinking of concentrating my efforts on studying for this test.

I've been using TOEIC test books to study with ever since my last TOEIC test last fall, but starting next month, I will use other texts as well. So, PRESIDENT magazine will be very useful to me.

After studying several books of プラマガ, although my listening comprehension has improved a little, my reading comprehension is still not so good. I plan to remedy this by studying reading comprehension more, starting next month.

Re: English Corrections

Hi, shiroi tora.

Thank you very much for the corrections.
I don't read this magazine usually because it doesn't say about English as usual, but the latest issue says about tips of English learning. So I read it this time.
And my husband is just an office worker though.

I have two questions.
Q1: What's the difference between 'I'm going to take a TOEIC test.' and 'I will be taking a TOEIC test.'?
Q2: What's the difference between 'following September' and 'this September'?
Please tell me.

Answer to Sakae's question

I had inferred you normally read the magazine because you had mentioned that "it features articles about English"... . This is to say that it normally has articles about English in the magazine. If you had wished to say that this was an anomaly, then "it featured an article about English"..."specifically an article about TOEIC".

Q1: What's the difference between 'I'm going to take a TOEIC test.' and 'I will be taking a TOEIC test.'?
Q2: What's the difference between 'following September' and 'this September'?

A1: Either is fine. However, by using 'will' instead of 'going to', as you write more complicated sentences, it becomes far simpler, and you may be far more concise with it (e.g. - I will go vs. I am going to go).
In general, use 'will' in place of 'going to' when possible. It will simplify English for you.

A2: If you meant you will take the test in four months, then 'this September' is correct. If you meant you will take the test in sixteen months, then 'September of next year' would be best. Try to stay away from using 'next' in place of 'this'. There is considerable confusion in America with these terms being used interchangeably with each other and with 'next' meaning not this one, but the following one.

If you meant by using 'following' to be September of next year, then you will have to use a lot of unnecessary words to make it unambiguous when with four words, it is both, concise and precise.
e.g. - September of next year vs. not this September, but the following one.
