study English 8/26/2014

It's getting cooler here. The temperature is around 20℃ today.

I've been frustrated because I haven't been able to study English as much as I want. As you may know, I'm going to take a TOEIC test next month, and I want to complete two workbooks, 究極のゼミPart7 and 新最強トリプル模試3, before the test.
I've finished more than a half of 究極のゼミPart7 and one third of 新最強トリプル模試3 now. I'm running behind the schedule.

I used to study English in the early morning, but I can't get up early now. I don't jog, either.
Why has my lifestyle changed? Because I have to take care of my son at night.

Since my son hasn't listened to me and he hasn't studied very much, I made him go to tutoring school from last April. I had expected his marks would be better then.
However, I was shocked to see his result of tests in the summer vacation. All of his marks were miserable and even got deteriorated. Almost all of them were under a half of perfect. I have to admit he is not so smart, but I wondered why his marks were such bad. My husband said that it was my fault. Yes, that was true. I had relied on the tutoring school too much. I hadn't looked after his studying at all. I was worried about his future and I thought I have to sit next to him while he is studying even though he hates it.
He usually starts to study after eight o'clock at night because of the soccer club or so, and I have something to do after he finishes studying. So I can't go to bed as early as before, therefore, I can't get up early to study.

That's why I've been frustrated, but firstly I have to deal with my son's state before too late.
That's a mother, isn't it?

I'm really sorry to hear about your son's scores. I don't know what advice to give you. :(

I suspect Shiroi Tora will bring this up, but I don't know what "Almost all of them were under a half of perfect" means.

Does it mean the perfect score is 100 and he got less than 50?

Re: No title

Hi, Always visiting.

Yes, that's right. I'm looking forward to getting his corrections.
Thank you for your comment.

Comment

Actually, I would like to comment on the content of this article before I make any corrections.

Please don't take offense at my comment. I will be doing here what has alienated so many people in my life in the past. So why do it? Your whole child's future is at stake. A few simple realizations can make a large difference in a person's life.

The education of a child is an extremely important topic. It will have a direct bearing on how well he will do in life economically. Being able to care for his future family is directly tied to his economic status. A well cared for family has a direct bearing on everyone's happiness in that family.

How well his future family will eat, as well as their living conditions, all have a direct bearing on their physical and psychological health.

EVERYTHING is tied into a child's education. His attitude toward life is an extension of his love, or hatred, of learning.

Below 50% won't even get him a job in a fast food restaurant. Alarm bells and emergency klaxons should be going off in your heads right now. As parents, you should be on full military alert. You should be in full operational planning mode.

There is so much I have to say on this extremely important topic. However, I cannot go into great detail here. I have bruised too many toes of people in my past because I tend to give uninvited advice and I tend to not respect societal boundaries whenever I know that the advice can lead a person to a better life (although I understand the reasons for the boundaries...these artificial constructs are too superficial and tend to block all the good reasons for fear of offending the few).

In general, drive is the most important attribute for success.
Drive is developed through positive reinforcement.

Intellectual guidance is achieved through direct study supervision through the simplification of the lessons (conceptual guidance).

Deferred gratification is practiced daily (as are his studies) by making all of his studies the FIRST thing to accomplish. It must be priority number one...before sports, before TV, before video games.

Daily studying (weekends, holidays, summer included) allows for smaller bites to be taken, and so, to be more easily absorbed. Start with shorter and more frequent daily study sessions (with short breaks between sessions) on a daily basis.

In general, you greatly praise achievements (positive reinforcement)... and you greatly limit anything negative (limit frustration by explaining concepts and by then guiding him to positive results through the Socratic Method of teaching).

He will soon achieve heights never before realized. It will be these victories which shall be the blueprint for his future successes. It is when this is achieved that his drives shall be internalized. This is where he shall start to love learning.

Your son has yet to realize that he will be entering a national arena of intellectual combat. His whole future will be riding on his preparations. He must hone his skills in the training halls (home) before battle.

Whether he will be riding into combat with a finely honed sword and highly polished armor while riding astride a great war horse...
or if he shall be a mere page assigned to cleaning up the horses' stalls...is directly determined by the results of his studies.

It is not about aptitude...it is about attitude. It is not about throwing information at a child...it is about teaching him the desire to play the game and having him have the drive to want to catch the ball and return it with great fervor.

You, as a mother, are the key to the success of your children, and that of your nation. There is no other person who is more important to the next generation. It is each generation which forms the building blocks of the nation. It is the heart of the child which shall drive his mind.
It is his mother who is the key to his young heart.

You must understand...this is not about losing a mere battle...it is about possibly losing the war (the heart and mind of your son...his whole future).

It's getting cooler here. The temperature *was around 20℃ today.

* As temperatures greatly fluctuate depending on the time of day, and you were emphasizing the cooling of the days, a low and high temperature would give the readers a more accurate picture. Or you could simply say that the temperature hovered in the 20 degree C range for most of the day. If you were talking in the present...then you would say 'is around 20 degrees C now' and you would also give the time.

I've been frustrated because I haven't been able to study English as much as I would like.
I'm running behind schedule.

I used to jog and then study English in the early morning, but I can no longer get up early.

Why has my lifestyle changed? Because I have to monitor my son's studies at night.

Since my son hasn't listened to me and he hasn't studied very much, I've been making him go to tutoring school since last April. I thought his grades at school would improve by sending him there.
However, I was shocked to see his scores *during summer vacation.

*It is unclear as to why you had received the scores during summer vacation. Were these grades from his spring semester at school? Were they the grades he had received from his after school tutoring sessions? Had he gone to Summer School?

All of his *scores were miserable, and had even deteriorated. In almost all of his tests, he had scored less than 50% correct.

*Marks generally refer to grades, and scores refer to tests.

I have to admit he is not so smart, but I wondered why his scores were so poor. My husband said that it was my fault. Yes, that was true. I had relied on the tutoring school too much. I hadn't monitored his studying at all.

Since I am worried about his future, I started sitting next to him while he studies, even though he hates it.

Because of his extracurricular after school activities (such as soccer practice), he doesn't even start studying until after eight P.M.. As I have other things to do after he finishes studying, I can't go to bed as early as before, therefore, I can no longer get up early to study.

That's why I've been frustrated. However, my son's issues must come first.

After all, the prioritization of a mother's child, even over herself, is a demonstration of her love, isn't it?

Re: Comment

Hi, shiroi tora.

Thank you very much for your kind comment and advice.
I'll read it to my son later as well.
Speaking of 'positive reinforcement', I haven't praised him recently. I'd like to support him as much as I can, as you advised.
