When I have a cold,

IMG_8820_convert_20151020092258.jpg

I got some sweet potatoes, so, I made a Caramel Nuts Sweet potato Cake.

I caught a cold from a person who had a cough a few times just in front of me last week. At that time, I was afraid that I would catch a cold. A few days later, it came true.
I got better now, but I had been in bed last weekend. It was not so serious, but I didn't want to do housework. My family members usually rely on me about almost everything of housework. Actually, I don't want them to rely on me when I have a cold. However, on Saturday, I had only prepared for rice and set up a bread machine for the next morning.
I had expected that my husband and son would cook together, but they ended up buying some dishes from a superparket. They were pleased to get half price because it was late at night.
In the last Sunday evening, I asked my son to cook something easy. He was reluctant to cook Mabo-tofu using special sauce on the market.
I praised him as a good cook exaggeratedly.

I *had some sweet potatoes, so, I made a Caramel Nuts Sweet Potato Cake.

* I was unsure whether or not you had bought them, you had them already, or if you had gotten them by other means. So, I went with the most common usage.

I am better now, but I had been in bed all of last weekend. It was not so serious, but I didn't feel up to doing housework. My family members usually rely on me for almost all housework duties. Actually, I don't want them to have to rely on me when I am ill. However, on Saturday, I had only prepared rice and set up the bread machine for the next morning.

Last Sunday evening, I asked my son to cook something easy. He was, at first, reluctant to even cook Mabo-tofu using special sauce from the market. However, he eventually cooked some for us.

* During supper, even though I had greatly exaggerated my praise of his cooking, I know my son did not feel I was being condescending, because I could see a glint of pride in his eyes.

* I assumed this is how the situation had played out.

Re: English Corrections

Hello, Shiroi Tora.

Thank you so much for the corrections.

Please tell me the difference between 'ill' and 'sick'.
I thought that sick was lighter than ill. When you just cough, which do you say, 'ill' or 'sick'?

Answer to Sakae's question

Sakae's Question:

Please tell me the difference between 'ill' and 'sick'.
I thought that sick was lighter than ill. When you just cough, which do you say, 'ill' or 'sick'?

My Reply:

The words 'ill' and 'sick' are almost synonymous. The word 'ill' is more formal and includes long term diseases. It is most frequently used by the medical community and by educated adults. The word 'sick' is most often used by children, or by adults when they mean feeling the various symptoms of being ill, such as fever, nausea, or general malaise ('I feel sick' vs a child saying 'I am sick'). However, adults often say they are sick when in informal settings.

When at the doctor's, adults will most often say they are ill and then describe their symptoms.

Formal example: "Doctor, I'm ill. I have nausea, a fever, and my body aches everywhere".

Informal example: "Steve, I won't be going to work today. I am sick. You will have to carpool with Gary."

Example of both being used: "I am ill. I feel so sick in the mornings that I cannot eat breakfast".

The word 'sick' most often refers to feeling nauseated. That is why people often say that they were 'worried sick'. Anything which generates nausea is something which makes them feel sick. However, often times, unless nausea is a symptom, many will just describe their symptom and say they are 'coming down with something' rather than say they are sick.

Ex.: "I have a runny nose and a headache. I hope I don't get sick".

For many people...sick equates to feeling nauseated only.

I hope this answers your question.
